neiluk Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 Hi all, I was considering buying a diesel Galaxy but the prices are steeper and I have read they are ony worth buying if you do high milages. I want a cheap 'reliable' well specced Galaxy for as little money as possible. I never do more than 5000 miles a year. I saw this add (below) for a 2.3 Ghia X and was wondering if you would buy it. what do you think? unfortunately it doesn't come with a picture. The car is about 150 miles from me :-/ . Yes it's a dealers. They state "All of our cars come with a full or long MOT and will have a pre delivery inspection carried out by a local garage. In addition we include 3 months mechanical breakdown insurance (warranty). This can be extended to 6 months or 1 year depending on the length of cover required. " As I'm 150 miles away from the dealer I'm not sure how much good a warranty would be to me. I can see I could drive it back if the air con breaks, but it wouldn't be much good if the gear box goes etc (or would it). I doubt the AA would tow me that far! Would the age and milage put you off as it has a fFsh? Neil. Edited March 11, 2007 by neiluk Quote
gregers Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 (edited) ring them up and ask if they would allow the car to be fixed elsewhere etc and if they agree get it in writing, but then again if you are unfortunate to brake down TELL THEM TO COME AND GET IT. Edited March 11, 2007 by gregers Quote

I believe (but I could be wrong) that under consumer legislation, whilst a dealer is obliged to fix faults, they are not obliged to recover the vehicle. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 160,000 miles on a petrol? The age is ok if it runs good, and warranty etc seems good, and service hist etc, its not a bad deal lol Matt Quote
sahar Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Hi be wary, especially with mileage. A lot of diesels are used as cabs, then clocked. It is really easy to fiddle with the electronic mileage on a ford galaxy so insist on a HP check and a mileage check, and insist on a full service history just to satisfy yourself that youre not getting a car with a clobbered engine Quote
greg_68 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) I personally wouldn't buy a petrol with that many miles on the clock. Also says mot 03/07, will they renew that? Other than that it's pot luck with second hand cars. FFSH means nothing, funny how people think it's great if their cars got one but moan like stink that at service time they don't actually do much for the money it costs. If you go to see it check everything(especially electrical) works. AirconLeccy windowsCentral lockingWipersInternal lighting.Check compartment under passenger seat for rust (water ingress into modules) If it was near a member perhaps they wouldn't mind having a first look for you, they would know what to look for and maybe take some piccies etc. Where is it? My one word of advice would be at that money, if you do buy it as soon as you start having trouble with it get rid as soon as possible as they are well known cash dispensers. Good luck. tim-spam Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Old petrol powered MPV's can be very difficult to sell, especially with a high mileage - this may be the reason for the low price. So, my advice would be to check it all over very carefully and have an emissions check done on the engine - this can show up a multitude of problems. If all is clear, and you don't mind mid 20's mpg, go for it. Quote
El Dingo Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 The price is about right for that age, but even a bit high for that mileage, in my opinion. If this was a VW 2.0 engine, I'd say that 160k is fine if the engine has been correctly serviced - I don't know enough about Ford engines - Scorpiorefugee would no doubt have a view on this. ANY vehicle this age and milage can be difficult to sell, petrol or diesel. Buyers of older vehicles will avoid complexity, and don't usually like things like climate control, auto boxes, electrical toys (windows, central locking, etc.) and anything with a turbo. Quote
